Many foreign trained dentists take several years to find their feet in the United States and acquire licensure and employment in the dental profession. Some will spend years in underemployment and suffer unmeasured consequences of this – lack of fulfillment and depression.

"Synergy" means the effect of two or more individuals cooperating is greater than the sum of their separate effects. The Synergy Program for Foreign Trained Dentists is a unique, 5-day course offered through University of Michigan School of Dentistry's Office of Continuing Education. This special course partners students with a Faculty mentor throughout the 5 days of the program for a customized learning experience. We designed the course to help fast track the learning of foreign dentists about the US healthcare system, the US dental profession, the US educational system and cultural differences that will strengthen their applications and interview performance in an International Dentist program in the US.

However, applicants should be thoughtful before committing to this course –participation requires extensive preparation. The 5 days of the course will include significant amounts of homework and daily preparations and pre-reading – participants will only gain from the course if they are 100% committed.

Students will be engaged in coursework for 38 hours during the week. However, only 20 hours of this qualifies for American Dental Association (ADA) certified Continuing Education (CE) credit. The remaining time includes activities ineligible for CE credit such as Mock admissions interviews, and working with your faculty leader on CV’s and personal statements.
